This chapter examines the evolving theoretical and methodological approaches to studying the interplay between journalism and technology, particularly with the rise of algorithmic journalism and artificial intelligence (AI). Historically, this relationship was viewed through a tech-deterministic lens, but it has shifted toward recognizing the resilience of journalistic practices. AI introduces challenges to transparency and accountability, thus prompting the need for an interdisciplinary research framework. We propose a three-step approach: using actor–network theory to map sociotechnical environments, integrating values through value-sensitive design, and translating these values into guiding principles. This framework aims to improve the understanding and design of AI-driven tools in journalism while ensuring alignment with professional values. This chapter contributes to the discourse by providing a robust foundation for the research and practical integration of AI into journalism.
